生検で側頭動脈炎と診断された90名の患者が6ヶ月から12年まで追跡調査されている。この疾患を患う患者には2つのグループがあるように思われる：治療によく反応する患者と、治療後も慢性的な経過をたどる患者である。このシリーズでは重篤な晩期合併症は発生していない。コルチコステロイドの高維持量（1日10mg以上）は死亡率の増加と有意な相関がある。

Ninety patients with biopsy proven temporal arteritis have been followed up from 6 months to 12 years. There appear to be two groups of patients who suffer with the disease: those that respond well to treatment and those who follow a chronic course depsite treatment. Serious late complications were not encountered in this series. A high maintenance level of corticosteroids (greater than 10 mg daily) correlates significantly with an increased mortality rate.
