Career Paths and Satisfaction of Dental Hygienists Holding Master's and Doctoral Degrees.

歯科衛生士という職業を発展させるだけでなく、複雑な医療システムの要求に応えるために、高度な学位を持つ歯科衛生士の必要性が高まっている。本研究の目的は、修士号と博士号を持つ歯科衛生士のキャリアパスと満足度を調査することである。修士号と博士号を持つ歯科衛生士（n=20）を目的サンプルとして、質的記述現象学的研究デザインを使用した。フォーカスグループを実施し、全国的なサンプルを利用するために、ウェブベースの仮想ビデオ会議プラットフォームが使用された。フォーカス・グループは音声で録音され、文字に起こされた。データは、手作業と質的分析ソフトウェアでテーマ分析された。その結果、管理者、弁護士、起業家、歯科医師、看護師、教育者、研究者、講演者、コンサルタント、編集者、州口腔保健プログラム・コーディネーター、マーケティングなど、幅広いキャリアパスが示された。また、参加者は高度な教育を受けることに満足し、価値を感じていることが示されました。その結果、「機会の拡大」、「個人の成長」、「専門家としての成長」、「信頼性」、「投資である」、「とにかくやってみること、自分を分析しすぎたり推測したりしない」という6つのテーマが浮かび上がりました。その結果、高度な教育や多様なキャリアパスへの満足が示唆されました。また、参加者は、歯科衛生士という職業を発展させるために、より多くの歯科衛生士が修士・博士課程で教育を受けることを支持した。

There is an increased need for dental hygienists with advanced degrees to meet the demands of a complex health care system in addition to advancing the dental hygiene profession. The purpose of this study was to explore the career paths and satisfaction of dental hygienists with master's and doctoral degrees. A qualitative descriptive phenomenological research design was used with a purposive sample of dental hygienists (n=20) who had master's and doctoral degrees. A virtual web-based videoconferencing platform was used to conduct focus groups and utilize a national sample. Focus groups were audio recorded and transcribed. Data was analyzed for themes manually and with qualitative analysis software. The results showed a wide range of career paths such as: administrator, lawyer, entrepreneur, dental therapist, dentist, nurse, educator, researcher, public speaker, consultant, editor, state oral health program coordinator, and marketing. The results also indicated that participants were satisfied and valued the pursuit of their advanced education. The six themes that emerged included: expanded opportunities; personal growth; professional growth; credibility; it's an investment; and just do it, don't overanalyze or second guess yourself. Findings suggest satisfaction with advanced education as well as a wide variety of career paths. Participants also endorsed more dental hygienists being educated at the master's and doctoral level to advance the profession of dental hygiene.
